At the heart of Varnavino bone-carving there a peculiar artistic style developed on the basis of the expressive patterns of Nizhny Novgorod wood-carving. Each product is carved by a craftsman from the very beginning up to the end without any punches or models, which helps express individuality of the author and artistic approach to the production of each sample.
Varko Ltd. is the company that has revived the traditions of bone-carving in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
The revival of the bone-carving craft began in 1969, when P.?P. Chernikovich, a famous bone-carver from the village of Kholmogory, submitted the first products of carved bone to the Regional Artistic Expertise Council. Soon a school of bone-carving was opened in Varnavino to train bone-carvers. Later the school was reorganized into a branch of Kazakovo Jewellery Association, and specialized in bone-carving. Due to the considerable growth of the output the branch acquired the status of an independent enterprise – Varnavino Art Factory – in 1989.

Now Varko Ltd. is engaged in production of the goods of bone made in the technique of openwork, bold and volume carving. The company produces over 300 items of products for practical and decorative purposes. These are decorations, boxes, small boxes, desk sets, chess, candlesticks, vases, glasses, crochet needles and needle-cases. The company is quite experienced in developing and manufacture of items with firm's symbols.
